# Definition

ATS optimisation is the practice of formatting and wording a resume so that applicant tracking systems (ATS) — the software most employers use to screen applications — can read it correctly and rank it highly for a given role. This means clean, parseable formatting and the right keywords drawn from the job description.

# Why it matters

Many resumes are filtered out by ATS before a human ever reads them, often due to formatting the software cannot parse or missing keywords. Optimising for ATS improves the chance a resume reaches a recruiter and earns an interview callback.
